Review

Celtic have bounced back but you have to see it as a partial recovery. Good work by McGeady was insufficent as we were lucky not to go in at half-time behind. A bollocking by Mowbray seems to have done the trick and we coasted the second half three nil.

Robbie Keane got a hat trick with the first goal being a sublime piece of skill collecting a great long ball by the much maligned Braafheied before rounding the keeper and slotting it into the back of the net. The other two goals showed great positioning as his colleagues worked the ball with Fortune selflessly gifting the chances to Keane to tap the ball in.

Nice win and thankfully a good change for the support.

Celtic's entry into the Scottish Cup semi-finals was basically personal retribution for Robbie Keane, whose hat-trick exacted revenge on the Kilmarnock side who had ruined his debut for the Parkhead side last month.
The striker also kept Celtic's season alive, in the process putting a grotesquely misleading scoreline on a match that Kilmarnock had seemed unlikely to lose, far less by such a margin.
Indeed, in a game in which defeat would have effectively ended their interest in the honours, Celtic for long periods played as though the worst had already happened. It was, in other words, often the kind of colourless, lifeless performance that has typified their endeavours since the start of the campaign.
This general blandness is never more obvious than in the vicinity of the opposition goal, and even the expensive capture of Keane on loan from Spurs has not been sufficient to redeem Tony Mowbray's side's prospects of regaining the SPL championship.
In this cup tie, until the Republic of Ireland international's second-half burst, he once again spent too much time chasing irretrievable causes. Perhaps this explained his sluggishness in attempting to convert the two good opportunities that came his way before half-time. A through ball from Marc Crosas left the striker with only Cammy Bell to beat, but he drove the ball straight at the goalkeeper's legs.
When he was next supplied by Aiden McGeady, he was too dilatory in releasing his shot, allowing Scott Severin to come across and make the block.
These were isolated moments in a first half in which Kilmarnock had the territorial advantage and frequently looked the more dangerous. They should have taken the lead when Darren O'Dea was unfortunate to see his good tackle "rewarded" by the ball breaking straight to Alan Russell. The striker tried to side-foot the drive first-time, but lifted it over Lukasz Zaluska and against the crossbar.
O'Dea would make an important intervention later, when Jamie Hamill's measured header down to Craig Bryson gave the latter the opportunity to deliver a net-bound drive and the Celtic defender deflected the ball for a corner kick.
Even Tim Clancy himself must have wondered what had become of the referee and his assistant when both missed his dreadful stamp on Morten Rasmussen's shin. The Kilmarnock man could have been shown a red card but did not even receive a yellow – at least, not until his later challenge on Scott Brown. The match officials also missed Rasmussen's off-the-ball elbow into the face of Frazer Wright, another offence that would have demanded a dismissal.
Celtic were noticeably more vibrant early in the second half and McGeady, the liveliest of all, was denied the goal he deserved when Bell made an excellent save from the Ireland international's drive. But, almost typically, the visitors had been reined in once again by the time Keane atoned for earlier failures with the goal that gave them the lead.
It came from nothing, a long ball punted forward from Edson Braafheid in the left-back position. Suddenly, however, James Fowler had slipped in midfield and Keane was bolting towards the ball as it dropped from the sky. His first touch was extraordinary, taking him past Bell and allowing him to knock the ball left-footed into the unprotected net from six yards.
Most of what good work Celtic produced in forward areas came from McGeady and it was his perfect pass to Keane that was relayed on to Georgios Samaras – he and Marc-Antoine Fortune had replaced Crosas and Rasmussen, and the Greece striker, from a tight angle on the left, was a little unfortunate to see his shot slip outside the far post.
But Keane's 90-second explosion near the end would leave Kilmarnock muttering about the game's injustices. Fortune did the good work on the left that brought the rolled pass to Keane and allowed the striker to tap the ball over the line.
It was another pass from McGeady that released Fortune on the right and his square pass to Keane saw the striker hit the drive, first time, high to the left of Bell from 18 yards.

Jimmy Johnstone carved the Basel defence up, almost from the kick off, providing the pass for Harry Hood to hammer the ball into the Swiss net.

That was about the last time Johnstone had things his way on this autumn evening as the Celtic goal seemed to galvanise Basel and their defence shut down the winger’s potent threat.

The Basel team was filled with Swiss internationals and for much of the night their defence played like one of the best in Europe.

In particular goalkeeper Marcel Kuns was outstanding, keeping out a succession of shots and headers from the Celtic attack. In the end Celtic’s pace, individuality and imaginative moves made the difference and Tommy Gemmell fired home a decisive second goal.

The second round draw paired Celtic with 1962 champions Benfica. This meant that they would go back to Lisbon, the scene of their own European Cup triumph in 1967.

After the draw was made Jock Stein said, “We made many friends in Portugal and we are happy about meeting a side of the calibre of Benfica. They will undoubtedly attract a full house at Celtic Park when they come to Glasgow”.

Although Celtic came out of the draw first, meaning the first leg would be at home, Rangers were also drawn at home in the first leg of their European Cup Winners’ Cup tie with Gornik Zabrrze.

Rules stated that clubs who are located less than 56km (31 sq miles) apart could not play at home on the same night. This meant that a ballot had to be drawn to decide which of the Glasgow clubs would have their first leg tie switched. As it was Celtic were allowed to play at home and Rangers moved their first leg match to Poland.

Celtic opened their campaign in September of 1969 away to FC Basel of Switzerland, who were managed by the former German international Helmut Benthaus. At the time there were concerns that the Celtic team had lost their edge and perhaps a game against the likes of Real Madrid or AC Milan might see their tournament get off to a more dynamic start.

Manager Jock Stein however was confident that his side would be ready to rise to the occasion, having tested their “European away game” against Aberdeen in the League Cup the previous week. Stein had set Celtic up as an attacking side, though in away ties in Europe he recognised that they had to drop their natural attacking instincts and become more defensive.

38,000 spectators watched a match that Celtic were always in command of, although they couldn’t find a way through to goal. As it was, they were very happy to come away with a no score draw, confident that they could finish the job back in Glasgow.

Biog

Francis 'Frankie' Quinn was a Saltcoats born outside-right.

A welder at Ardrossan shipyard, Quinn signed for the Bhoys in November 1946 after impressing in the junior game with Saltcoats Victoria. He made a scoring debut as he netted once in a 2-0 defeat of Partick Thistle in a league match at Parkhead on March 22nd 1947.

He made a total of seven Celtic ppearances - with two goal to his name - before being relased by the club in 1948. Frankie went on to sign for Dundee United where he established himself as a firm favourite.

Signed from St Mirin's Boys Guild in March 1966 Paisley-born Hay learnt his trade in the legendary 'Quality Street Gang' Celtic reserve team of the late 60s alongside the incredible talents of Dalglish, McGrain and Connelly. He made his first team debut as a substitute in a 4-1 league win over Aberdeen at Parkhead on March 6th 1968 and initially he was played in the right-back position.

Jock Stein however recognised that Hay's qualities would be much better utilised in midfield and that is where he really earned his reputation as one of the finest players of his generation. Hay was the rarest of creatures in that he was a creative midfielder who was also a peerless ball winner.

His big break came in October 1969 when he was picked at left back for the League Cup Final against St.Johnstone after Tommy Gemmell was controversially suspended by Jock Stein. Celtic won 1-0 through a Bertie Auld goal and Davie had his first medal.

On February 21st 1970 the versatile Davie ploughed through the Rangers midfield and fired a glorious 25 yard goal, the key moment in Celtic's 3-1 win. At this point he came face to face with Rangers captain and hard man John Greig but Davie came out on top of their encounters even at such a young age. He was impressive at right back against Leeds United in the 1970 European Cup semi final games and handled himself well in the final against Feyenoord, also at right back despite the disappointing defeat.

By the 1970/71 season he had became a key player especially with his versatility. In 1971 he was in central defence as left half in the Scottish Cup final replay 2-1 win against Rangers and was instrumental in bringing the title to Parkhead, helping hold off a strong challenge that season from Aberdeen. In the European Cup Celtic went out 3-1 on aggregate to the magnificent Ajax team as Europe marvelled at the unique talents of the great Johan Cruyff.

He won another league medal in 1972 though he was injured from the run in and missed the 1972 Scottish Cup final romp against Hibs. More importantly that injury cost Celtic the chance to play him against Inter Milan in the 1972 European Cup semi final games which Celtic lost on penalties and Davie's appearance could have swayed the tie in Celtic's favour. Hay's presence was key to Celtic's great success of the period and he played regularly in both full back positions and in midfield.

The 1972/73 season was another outstanding one and the league was won for the 8th successive season on a memorable spring day at Easter Road. Jock Stein stated that it was the reappearance of David Hay and Jimmy Johnstone in the Spring of 1973 that had given Celtic the edge in a tight league race with Rangers, which went to the wire on the last day for Celtic against Hibs. By this time Davie was an established Scottish international and the big clubs in England had him in their sights.

In December 1973 Davie and George Connelly were in dispute with Celtic over their pay and conditions, basically he went on strike and refused to play or train. Connelly yielded but broke his ankle against Basle in 1974 and eventually Davie also had to make up with Celtic and was in the side in midfield that won the league at Brockville and defeated Dundee United 3-0 in the Scottish Cup final at Hampden. At this point in his Celtic career Davie had played in the numbers 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10 such was his versatility and he had excelled in every position. Put simply, David Hay could play anywhere on the field and be relied to turn in good performances on a regular basis.

He captained Scotland against West Germany in early 1974 and that summer Davie was magnificent when Scotland beat England at Hampden, their first victory over the English since 1967 and also in the 1974 World Cup finals in West Germany when he was Scotland's outstanding player against Brazil, Yugoslavia and Zaire. In the game against Brazil Davie and Billy Bremner were superb when pitted against the great Brazilian midfield pairing of Rivelino and Clodoaldo. It was Tommy Docherty, who was a Scotland manager, who gave Davie Hay the moniker of "The Quiet Assassin" to define his style and quality of play on the pitch.

However when Davie returned from the World Cup, Chelsea, Spurs and Manchester United were after him and he was disappointed when Celtic accepted Chelsea's bid of £225,000. It's said that Davie Hay was willing to stay at Parkhead at that time for an extra tenner a week and so Celtic lost the heart of their team and future captain. Given the player's pivotal role in the success of Celtic and his growing reputation on the world scene the requests for a pay rise were probably well justified.

After a European Cup final appearance (1970), winning five league championships, two Scottish Cups and a league cup Hay left Parkhead for Chelsea after 230 appearance for the Hoops and 12 goals.

Following his switch to Stamford Bridge Hay's career would be interrupted by injury but his talent was one Celtic would struggle for years to replace. If he had stayed there is every chance Celtic would have won 10 in a row in 1974/75 as he was the driving force of the team and when he left the team was never quite the same without him and Rangers would prevent the 10 from becoming reality.

One noteable point to Davie Hay's departure was the impact on George Connelly. A precocious talent, George Connelly found it hard at Celtic, and after Davie Hay's departure he didn't stay long himself. Close friends, Davie Hay to this day has remained silent on much of the period of events that surrounded George Connelly. In part, it is said that Jock Stein allowed Davie Hay to leave Celtic as he felt that it could help George Connelly (as a break between the two could be good) but it didn't work out like that.

In May 1976 Davie returned to Parkhead to play for Celtic as a guest in the Johnstone/Lennox testimonial game against Manchester United. Davie played as if he'd never been away and the fans gave him a superb ovation as Celtic won 4-0 with a Dalglish hat trick. This spurred rumours that he was to return to Glasgow but, sadly, nothing ever came of it.

Davie Hay would return to Parkhead as manager in 1983 (see below), and then later again as part of the management team under Tommy Burns in the 1990s.

Davie Hay was easily one of Celtic's greatest ever players. We only wish that we could have held onto him for longer but board financial incompetence saw an end to that.

Davie Hay after his playing days were cut short was destined to find some niche in football coaching or management. He was given a role on the Chelsea youth coaching, and then later his first major management role came at Motherwell where he helped to guide them to the Premier Division by winning the Division One title. A great feat in itself and he was well respected at the club, however an opportunity from the US came knocking and he decided to take the chance with the club's blessing. It turned out to be a major error as circumstances in the US turned the dream into a nightmare and he soon returned.

After Billy McNeil's departure from Celtic, Davie Hay became a surprise appointment taking in his inexperience aged only 35.He was probably one of the last of his kind, as soon after the money revolution began with Souness to become Rangers manager and change the face of football business management in Scotland.

Seen as an intelligent, respected tactician with a relaxed style but a harder edge than his demeanour suggests, he didn't have it easy having to compete against the strong "New Firm" duo of Aberdeen and Dundee Utd. He made a rash announcement on his appointment that he would quit if Celtic didn't win a trophy in his first season. It wasn't to be so easy but rather was agonising for the new manager. We finished runners-up in the league to Aberdeen, the League Cup to the Huns and the Scottish Cup to Aberdeen again, but there were no calls for his head, and as someone humoured to Davie Hay, Celtic did win the BP Youth Cup so he was saved. It was difficult and there were elements of bad luck.

It was just as difficult in the following season where we finished second in the league (again), but Davie Hay finally managed to land the silverware he deserved by managing the side to the Scottish Cup win in 1985 where we defeated the dour Dundee Utd side 3-2 in a cracking match. It was our first trophy since 1982 and as it was the 100th Scottish Cup final, it was a special victory. It was relief for Davie and gave him valuable breathing space, but it was the least he deserved after the way his tenure had gone being a nearly man too often in all comps.

He may not have won the league as yet, but we competed well and he had some fine but difficult players under his belt including Brian McClair, Murdo MacLeod, Alan McInally and Mo Johnston, which created a great attacking side to watch. Defensively things were not as good as they could be and was a continuous weakness. Overall, Davie Hay was gaining experience and could see increasingly where things were going right and wrong. It was learning at the deep end but he was doing a fine job.

Despite the difficulties at home, there was some respite and drama in Europe for Hay. A cracking match against Sporting Lisbon rekindled memories of old as we won by a breath-taking 5-0 at home after being 2-0 down from the first away i.e., marked by many as one of our greatest European matches (before losing out to Notts Forest in a later round).

However, the main talking point is the matches against Rapid Vienna (Austria) in the UEFA cup in 1984. In the first games, after a difficult first leg Davie Hay's team got it right in a wonderful win only for all the work to be then undone. Cheating and deceit saw UeFA at its lowest and most incompetent, awarding Rapid with a third game. Rapid duly won the replay match despite some good play by Celtic; we'd let ourselves but most importantly the players had let Davie Hay and themselves down. Taking in that we really were more than a match for them we could have gone all the way to the final as Rapid Vienna did that season (thankfully losing to Everton). It was heart breaking for Davie Hay, and he was cheated out of scaling the heights in Europe.

The 1985-86 season was a difficult season. Despite the parsimonious nature of the Board, the 85/86 season started well with McClair and Johnston the celebrated scoring duo in the League but the defensive errors and deficiencies soon became apparent. It was exciting play to watch and Davie Hay was building a good side. However, Hay was denied the cash to go out and buy the defenders required and with the appointment of the hapless Jack McGinn to Chairman the rumours for the replacement of Hay grew. Jack McGinn was out of his depth and his man management was later to show just how woeful he was.

To the surprise of many the championship went down to the wire between Celtic and the Gorgie Cloggers (Hearts), and against all expectations we won the League on a memorable last day at Love Street. Hearts only needed a draw and we needed to win by a hatful, and that we did winning by a giant margin to send the support into raptures. It was the least Davie Hay deserved. We'd fought all the way. Some ridiculously refused to give Davie Hay full credit but the league is a marathon and not a sprint and we finished top. In this case, we really were better it wasn't just a case of Hearts slipping up as cynics like to claim, plus Hearts dire style of football would have been a travesty for football if they were the league victors.

For the 1986-87 season, things were to change dramatically again for Scottish football. Rangers were reinvigorated with large cash injections and an ambitious new manager (Graeme "the Beast" Souness). In contrast, Davie Hay was again denied any support or real funds to go out and buy the players required to shore up the squad. Around Jan 1987, Jack McGinn (newly appointed chairman) disparagingly stated: "If Davie Hay wants to bring those players to Celtic then he will have to pay for them himself!". Charming!!! The biscuit tin mentality was really in vogue with the board. Defensive lapses were the real problem. We'd a terrific attacking side but not a complete team. If the management were more effective then Davie Hay could have been allowed to buy those defenders he required, and it was to backfire on us badly.

We'd established a good points lead in the League, but this was thrown away as points were lost later through repeated defensive errors. Furthermore the issue of player re-contracts had not been addressed (which led to the loss of Brian McClair for next to nothing at the end of the season and the departure of the gems in our squad at the time e.g. Murdo MacLeod, Mo Johnstone etc).

The league was lost to Rangers in a truly lacklustre style. A little extra spent on transfers would have made all the difference and given Davie Hay the recognition he deserved. The mutterings for the replacement of Hay grew, and with Jack McGinn at the helm of the club, it was already believed that he had wanted Davie Hay out months long before the end (personality clash?).

Strangely, at the end of the season Hay was finally permitted to go out and buy a defender - Mick McCarthy for £500,000 from Manchester City - a player precisely the kind he had been begging the board to buy during throughout the season. Then the following week he was called to a meeting with Jack McGinn and was asked/forced to resign. According to Davie Hay in his biography, Jack McGinn said: "We have decided that we must get rid of you as manager of the club. You can either resign or you can be sacked, but we would like you to resign. There will be compensation from the club."

Hay refused and was sacked on 28th May. He learnt of Billy McNeill's return as manager from the radio later that same day. Ironically he was replaced by the manager he had taken over from.

Shabbily handled by the board, it is a clear illustration of the cruel nature of the game and the incompetence of certain management. Hay was being sacrificed by the board having gained the invaluable experience he required. In truth he made few poor purchases and this was all on a limited budget. If the board were set to sack Davie Hay, why did they let him go out and buy a player for so much just before they dumped him? Baffling!

In fairness, Hay had now been given four seasons and only succeeded in one to win the league. He'd lost the last league in his last term even though we had a ten pt cushion and allowed the Huns to overtake us. That was difficult to argue against. He'd had success in getting strikers yet not any defenders, could the blame then really be the board alone?

On the other hand, how was any manager to succeed against the free spending Huns in his last season whilst his hands were tied behind his back? At the time, English clubs were banned from Europe and so a number of their better players were easy to cherry pick which Rangers did. Sadly our financial and board level blindness held us back, and Hay was left to suffer the consequences.

Tommy Burns summarised his opinion on Davie saying: "Davie Hay is a hard, hard guy and a lovely, totally straight-forward and honest bloke. But I don't think he was the right man to manage Celtic." Maybe it is simply true that the management life wasn't for Davie Hay, but he had succeeded well in inauspicious circumstances so Tommy was being a touch unfair. It didn't stop Davie Hay to continue to try elsewhere again in management and he showed he had the bottle to take on the difficult role and succeed.

Davie Hay was very unfortunate in that he was given the job when inexperienced but as soon as he gained the experience he was dumped. Poor treatment of a good man. Who knows how it might have panned out if he remained. Nevertheless, he can hold his head up high for his time as Celtic manager and many believe he should have been kept on.

In the new world of football, Celtic were initially poorly placed relative to Rangers, and Davie Hay became our first casualty. He was not to be the last.

Post Celtic Management

Davie Hay went on to have rewarding spells in management at St Mirren, Motherwell, Lillestrom (Norway, where he won the league) and Livingston (winning the league cup), returning later to Celtic as a scout for players, finding amongst others the highly talented but ultimately troublesome Three Amigos" - Pierre Van Hooijdonk.,Paolo Di Canio and Jorge Cadete. At the end of the 1996/97 season following the sacking of Tommy Burns and resignation of Billy Stark, Davie Hay held the fort at Celtic until the new General Manager, Jock Brown was appointed.

Under Jock Brown, Davie Hay was appointed Assistant General Manager as well as Chief Scout. When Wim Jansen was appointed they found that they had a lot in common and worked well together to identify players and signing targets at the start of 1997/98.

Sadly, a fallout with Jock Brown lead to his moving on again from Celtic, and this departure was not without acrimony, and sadly led to a court case of compensation.

Time has passed, and Davie Hay remains very much a Celtic man to the core, commonly appearing on Celtic TV. His opinions and comments are always well thought-out and valued by many within football. He will always be one of us.

Davie Hay's autobiography is quite a run of the mill state of affairs. The problem is that trying to condense Davie Hay's broad involvement over three separate eras - as a player, a manager and latterly a scout/coach - has meant that to keep the book at a manageable length for publication that much is glossed over. After reading about his time as a player you'd hardly realise that he was such a gifted player or that he kicked the ball (and so well). Issues are skated round (such as George Connelly) and there is little new added that could have been, Davie simply isn't the sort to rock the boat. The only revelation is that Petit Merde was taken to a private drug test (if that shocks you wrt him). Otherwise the book is quite a tame affair which little upsets anyone. Had the chance to set straight on more than it does, but then again that wouldn't be Davie Hay and that (in part) you can admire.

A native of Rutherglen, and son of an ex-Rangers player, Simon "Sid" Donnelly was one of the more lauded players from the misfiring conveyor belt of Celtic youth team talent to emerge in the dark days of the mid 1990s.

Amidst a series of promising performances as a callow 19-year old striker of no little guile and effort, Donnelly was unfortunately saddled with a comparison to Kenny Dalglish (by the then manager Lou Macari who said that he reminded him of someone he used to play with) after a startling good debut game, a comparison he was, unsurprisingly, unable to live up to, and was an unfair tag to place on him so early in his career.

His emergence as a youngster of genuine promise was sealed towards the end of the 1993-94 season. He produced a hard working shift as the lone striker in the infamous 'lock out' game at Ibrox (where he tormented the Rangers skipper Richard Gough) then stole the show at the much-lauded 'Theatre of Dreams' (Old Trafford), scoring twice against Manchester United in a testimonial match for Mark Hughes.

Struggling for form and confidence thereafter, then-manager Tommy Burns in one his more inspired decisions, decided to reinvent the young forward as a right sided midfielder, with recent signing Jackie McNamara supporting as overlapping fullback. The pair flourished with a genuine creative chemistry, and many observers were later to lament the disruption of the partnership by the signing of Paolo di Canio in 1996.

Donnelly's most significant contribution was as central striker alongside Henrik Larsson under the guidance of Wim Jansen, securing a double figure goals tally and scoring a number of important goals, not the least of which was the extra time penalty winner against St Johnstone in the League Cup, which arrested a disasterous start to the season, and a fiercely struck penalty against Liverpool in the epic UEFA Cup tie.

Despite a creditable season that was rewarded by Scotland coach Craig Brown with a place in the squad for the 1998 World Cup, Donnelly had been supplanted in the forward line by the erratic Harald Brattbaak and was therefore an increasingly peripheral figure at Celtic.

Despite that, there was genuine disappointment among the support, married to a degree of cynicism when in 1999, along with Phil O'Donnell he opted to depart on a Bosman transfer for Sheffield Wednesday, then in the Premier League, echoing the acrimonious departure of Di Canio two seasons previously.

The move was an ill-fated one; both young Celts were bedevilled by injury and intermittent form, while Wednesday plunged into financial crisis, and freefalling relegation.

Donnelly eventually returned to Scotland at McDairmid Park where his gusty extra time spot kick winner had arguably helped keep the crucial Jansen season alive. Following an unspectacular spell with Dunfermline, he is now back in his native Glasgow with Division 1 Partick Thistle.

Harshly judged, for a career and a talent that once promised so much, Donnelly's career can be seen to be representative of an increasing number of young players who have profited handsomely from the game in financial terms, but to the detriment of their medal collection. On the other hand, it was a difficult period to be involved throughout with Celtic and there was little more he could have added. Six years is a long time with a club that was then in freefall through much of the time, and so he deserves more respect and credit than given by some to date.

Biog

Uddingston-born goalkeeper Tom Doyle was signed by the Bhoys from Blantyre Celtic in November 1935. Mostly a reserve he was loaned to Arbroath before returning and eventually making his first team debut, following an injury to Joe Kennaway, in a 4-2 defeat at Third Lanark on April 6th 1937.

Tom played a total of five games for the Bhoys before being released in 1938 and joining Rochdale.

Feyenoord became the first Dutch team to win the European Cup and heralded in a golden era for Dutch football, albeit lorded by Ajax and the National side with Feyenoord's achievement overshadowed.
Last European Cup final for Celtic, favourites to win the European Cup this time but wasn't to be.
Wim Jansen, a midfielder for Feyenoord in the game, was later to become Celtic manager for one season, in 1997-98 and famously managed the club to halt Rangers from achieving ten league wins a row! In some ways, recompense for the final loss.
Tommy Gemmell's goal in this game, puts him in the exalted select group of players who have scored a European Cup final goal in more than one final.

Match Review

For all Celtic’s wonderful victories as underdogs they retain an agonising knack to let you down when you least expect it. Celtic are notoriously uncomfortable favourites. But never has that ability to self-implode been so painful and far-reaching as in the European Cup final of 1970.
This was Celtic’s chance to cement their place at European football’s top table. To show they were not just guests at this level but permanent residents. However Feyenoord would ensure that this occasion was every bit as sour as Lisbon was sweet.

It perhaps says everything about the talent and expectations of Celtic in 1970 that a European Cup final defeat was a disaster. In 2003 just reaching the UEFA Cup final was deemed cause for celebration. Even after defeat in that final it was an event worthy of a DVD release and countless merchandising cash cows. In 1970 the loss of a European final was simply a cause for mourning.

Having convincingly defeated the supposedly invincible Leeds United in the semi-finals Celtic had every reason to enter the game against the Dutch in confident mood. They had dismantled the English champions over two legs and were rightly installed as favourites for the final at the San Siro.

Despite taking the lead Celtic would slump to a 2-1 defeat. The cold written facts state it was a 2-1 extra-time victory for the Dutch. But the stats do not reflect the true picture of a game in which Feyenoord were the masters from start to finish. It was a scoreline which flattered Celtic every bit as much as the Bhoys 2-1 victory in 1967 flattered Inter Milan.

Defeated and dejected the Celtic team trailed off the San Siro pitch. They were well beaten by a side Billy McNeill would later admit had been badly under-estimated by the Celtic camp. Jock Stein had prepared his team well but mentally the Bhoys did not seem as focused or as hungry as their opponents. There was talk about a row over commercial deals for the players and there was a sense that all Celtic had to do was turn up and the European Cup was returning to Glasgow.

Jimmy Johnstone would recall nobody had rated Feyenoord and that there had been a sense that the European Cup was won with the defeat of Leeds. As Tom Campbell would state in The Glory and The Dream – The serpent of complacency had entered Paradise.

The final whistle at the San Siro did not just mark the end of the game. It signalled the beginning of the end of the most glorious chapter in Celtic’s history. A period of five years when the club’s stylish attacking football had made them the darlings of European football.

Jock Stein – who was left questioning his own judgement – was left to rebuild a demoralised team and an ageing squad which perhaps no longer had the fierce hunger for success they once possessed. It would be a massive task to take Celtic back to the top of European football. So massive that despite a valiant attempt it would prove even beyond the reach of Stein.

Memories of the Final

I was 11 years old and remember watching this final on TV with my father. Colour TV was not available in Britain in 1970 (not on Teesside, anyway), so my memories are in glorious, grainy, black-and-white Eurovision. The final was in Milan, which is a long, long way from Teesside (Middlesbrough), so the quality of the TV pictures was not what we are used to today - but they had their own unique magic which added to the drama of the occasion.

Three years earlier, in 1967, Celtic had won the European Cup Final against the odds and against a very strong Inter Milan team. Celtic were the underdogs then, completely unfancied, and generally unknown outside of their environs. A bit like Feijenoord in 1970.

The feeling in many quarters in Britain at the time was that Celtic would coast through the 1970 final and win easily against an unknown team who a) were Dutch, for God's sake, and b) to the English ear, had an unpronouncable name ("Feee-jen-ooooor-d?" - that's far too many vowels to be taken seriously, surely?).

The past truly is a foreign country. Feijenoord's name was almost as comical at the time as that of their great domestic rivals, Ajax of Amsterdam. In Britain in 1970, "Ajax" was a well-known cleaning product, the housewife's favourite, and it was just a hoot that those crazy Dutchmen would name a football club after a bottle of household bleach. By 1973, however, we all knew, greatly admired and could correctly pronounce the name of Ajax of Amsterdam. What is largely forgotten in Britain, if it was ever acknowledged at all, was that Feyenoord (as they renamed themselves after their historic victory) were the first Dutch club ever to lift the trophy.

Ironically (and I think this has more than a little to do with Celtic's disappointing and anti-climactic performance on the night of the final), most of Britain had already witnessed the "real" final when, in the semi-finals, Celtic took on and beat the much-fancied English champions Leeds United. The English are renowned for their myopic view of the world, and in 1970 such a stance was even more entrenched than it is today.

When Leeds were beaten (comprehensively 3-1 over 2 legs), the huge disappointment and resentment that was felt in England was palpable. Leeds were invincible in the English league at that time, although they struggled to turn their superiority into silverware. So, having defeated the English champions, Celtic would ipso facto walk away with the European Cup that year. No question.

The abiding memory for me is that of Billy McNeill who, deep in extra time with the score at 1-1, attempted to parry with both hands a long, high, looping ball as he stumbled backwards in the Celtic penalty box - a clear handball and therefore a clear penalty. Initially, we all shouted at the TV: "Accidental!", and in sheer disbelief and disappointment: "No way! He headed it!". But all the while we feared the worst, the inevitable penalty to Feyenoord.

A split second later, the ball fell to the Feyenoord centre-forward, Ove Kindvall, who had been a threat to the Celtic defence throughout the second half and extra time. The Celtic keeper, momentarily confused by the events, and like the rest of us, probably waiting for the referee to blow for a penalty, hesitated, transfixed almost, as, in an instant, Ove took control of the ball and stroked it past the goalkeeper into an empty net.

It was then that, in desperation, we all screamed "Penalty!", "He handled it!", "No-ooooo...!", etc.. But the referee allowed the goal to stand and that was the end of the dream for me. The game ended shortly after. That was the first time I experienced real grief.

Since that night, the Feyenoord football strip has always put the fear of God into me. To an impressionable 11-year-old, it was such an unusual and striking outfit at the time. But, even in defeat, it instilled in me a sneaking admiration for those unknown Dutch boys from Rotterdam who turned football on its head and heralded onto the world stage that magnificent Dutch philosophy known as "total football".

Biog

Peter Dowds was a great Celt who was willing to play anywhere and in any place for the Bhoys.

The Johnstone born man was brought to the then still fledgling Parkhead club in February 1889 from Broxburn Celtic. His competitive debut for Celtic saw him on the score sheet as the Bhoys won 5-0 at Hearts in the league on August 23rd 1890.

Although predominantly a left-sided player Peter Dowds was capable of playing all over the park and was often asked to do just that. Quick, strong and sure footed he was instrumental to the early successes of Celtic and was part of the first Bhoys side to lift the Scottish Cup. In May 1892 – with the Scottish game still amateur – he was tempted south by Aston Villa to play in the professional English league but he would return to Parkhead via Stoke City in May 1894. Effectively, he missed the chance to play in the first Celtic squad to win their first league titles (1892-93 & 1893-94).

However it soon became clear that Peter was an ill man. He played for Celtic in a friendly against Manchester City that December in what would prove to be his last appearance. He would die in September the following year after his health rapidly failed through the effects of consumption.

Peter Dowd played 49 times for the Bhoys and scored 21 goals.

Biog

A wartime loan signing Kilmarnock full-back Henry Dornan played 66 games for Celtic between May 1941 and 1944. His debut in the Hoops came on May 21st in a Glasgow Charity Cup match with Queen’s Park at Hampden which the Bhoys won 5-2.

Left-back Dornan had been on loan at Dumbarton when he was approached by Celtic who wanted him to stand in for Roy Milne who was serving in the RAF. Henry was a reliable and consistent performer for his temporary employers and gave valuable service to the Celtic cause until a knee injury in 1943.

After that he struggled to win a first team place and by 1944 he was on loan not at Parkhead but St Mirren.

Biog

Brazilian international Juninho made a near instant impact after arriving at Celtic Park on August 26th 2004.

The World Cup winner (2002) signed on a free transfer for the Bhoys from Middlesbrough where the gifted playmaker had become a legend during two spells on Teesside (not that they achieved much or anything with him).

While in England the diminutive star had earned a reputation as being an abundantly skilful but gutsy performer and he had to call on all those qualities immediately as he was thrust straight into the heat of a Glasgow derby clash. Much to the delight of the Hoops faithful the little Brazilian turned in a man of the match winning performance as Celtic defeated Rangers 1-0.

The 32-year-old displayed some wonderful touches and his direct running had the Gers defence in disarray time after time. When he was substituted towards the end of the game he was given a standing ovation from the home support. After such a wonderful debut hopes were high that Juninho would be the man to inspire Celtic to the latter stages of the Champions League as well as domestic dominance.

But things were never to be so good again for the Brazilian during his stay at Parkhead. The midfielder struggled to adapt to Celtic’s style and he was soon relegated to the bench by the manager, but then again he should have tried to adapt more but didn't. He joined Celtic and not the other way around.

He eventually netted his first goal for the Hoops on October 16 in a 3-0 home victory over Hearts but as his starting appearances became less frequent many fans began to question why manager Martin O’Neill had purchased the player in the first place.

When he was given the chance to start Juninho struggled to find any form but in fairness the sustained run in the side he needed was never given. By January it was clear that the Brazilian would not settle for life on the bench and he eventually was released from his contract in April after just 14 starts and only seven months after arriving at Parkhead.

Some people said that Juninho's inability to succeed at Celtic clearly showed Martin O'Niell's inability to handle flair players (having been criticised for similar with Lubo), but this is nonsense as Larsson easily flourished with Celtic. Didn't help that due to family circumstances that Martin O'Neill wasn't around Celtic much in his last season when Juninho arrived, and that is more likely a reasoning else he could have assisted more.

In any case, it all didn't work out, and too many apologists for Juninho have pointed out that he was a World Cup winner with Brazil. True, but that latter point is way overstated (see below) and a genuinely world class player would easily have fitted in better with us and made more of an impression.

Regardless, all the best to him in the rest of his career.

Juninho and the World Cup in 2002

Whenever Juninho's name comes up, it's always mentioned that he was a World Cup winning member of the Brazil squad in 2002 and so is some absolute barometer on his ability. Truth is that Juninho was not really a pivotal member of that run to the World Cup final win in 2002. He was substituted off in all the games and only brought on for the last 5 mins of the final and he didn't score any goals, so his place has been way overstated by too many apologists.

Granted you still have to be a great player just to be in a Brazil World Cup winning side, but too many people keep bringing this up about Juninho being part of the World Cup winning side in 2002 as if he was an important element when the truth is that he really wasn't as significant as made out.

In fairness, any player able to amass 50 caps for Brazil is exceptional, but that was before he'd come to Celtic and we had him past his best.

Celtic began a women's & girls academy in the summer of 2007

Biog

With a pedigree like that behind Jiri Jarosik you might think we’ve got ourselves a good deal. Its said that Mourinho (the self-proclaimed special one) left Porto after managing them to win the UEFA cup and then the European Cup on the back that the club wouldn’t help him get Jarosik, ending up bringing in the player in his successful stint at Chelsea. Alex Ferguson even had a few good words to say as we bought the player (“bargain” was in there somewhere). He even scored on his debut with us (always a good start) v Kilmarnock.

So where did it go wrong? Or did it go wrong? That’s the puzzle when it comes to this enigmatic player, and no side is entirely right or wrong. When you look at his emaciated build, you’d hardly think he has the physique to be a professional footballer, but underlying it was a very talented player. He could hold the ball and play good passes, the kind of player that Gordon Strachan (our manager who purchased him) likes so well.

Poor performances saw him in and out the side but interspersed were some match winning performances, nicking late and last minute goals twice against Hearts to help us come from behind against the mini-Huns to win. He also (cringingly) won us a free kick by his over-dramatics which led to the classic Naka free-kick to beat Man U in the Champions League.

Everyone knew that he had the skill to achieve much for the club, but excuses and reasoning by both camps on his ability abounded:

- He’s played out of position! Not his fault then?
- He’s too light-weight!
- He can’t take to the Scottish game!
- He’s too skilful! (Not a reason I’ve ever understood)
- He’s just plain lazy!
- He’s only here for European games etc etc etc.

Whatever side you were on and whatever you said about him, the bottom line was that at the end of the first season he wasn’t even fit for the bench. Into the new season when we were drawn against Spartak Moscow, he did an interview for a Russian paper giving the background to the squad. Many saw it as selling out his team mates, rest just thought he was just stating what everyone already knew. It was a bad move by him and he lost the faith of most certain sections of the support and the most cyncial saw it as a ploy to help him move on.

He ended up playing a few good games back in the first half of season 2007-08, but his heart was on leaving and he left unsurprisingly in Jan 08 for FC Samara. Said he didn’t like the food and weather, and basically came over as a bit too precious.

Analysing his time at the club is as much a puzzle as the man himself. There’s no right answers and explanations, but no doubt neither ourselves or anyone has or will ever get the best out of what Jarosik has the ability to achieve, and in that sense that is the biggest loss of them all. He never seemed to settle at any club. Maybe if he finally took some responsibility and admitted that the problem was partly himself then he might achieve what he potentially can.

On the other hand at least he has left us all with a good laugh (see Jarosik picture).

Biog

Born in New York to Irish parents John Donoghue was signed by Celtic in June 1926 from Shawfield Juniors.

The left-back made his debut in a 3-2 league defeat at Hibernian on 25th September 1926 and he would prove a solid and versatile defender for the Hoops over the following seasons. He remained at Parkhead until the summer of 1930 when he joined Wrexham. He would briefly return to Celtic in 1932 before joining French side Excelsior de Roubaix.

John Donoghue played 50 times for Celtic and scored one goal.

Biog

County Derry-born keeper William Donnelly was raised in Glasgow’s Garngad district and signed for the Bhoys in August 1900.

A former Hibernian and Liverpool player he joined the Bhoys from Clyde where he had earned a reputation as an expert stopper of penalty kicks.

He was brought to Parkhead as cover for Dan McArthur and made his competitive debut in a 5-1 defeat of Third Lanark on September 29 at Celtic Park.

Willie played a total of five games for the Bhoys before returning to his homeland to sign for Belfast Celtic in August 1901.
